There were five former RodeoHouston steer wrestling champions in Super Series III — and Stockton Graves wasn’t one of them.

Perhaps he’ll be the next.

Coming off a title at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Graves was the hottest bulldogger in the series, winning two go-rounds and finishing as the top money earner Wednesday at Reliant Stadium.

“I thought I’d been bulldogging pretty well,” Graves said. “I won San Antonio a couple weeks ago and that was a big win for me, so I’ve got things rolling a little bit and hopefully I can keep them rolling.”

Stockton was 4.7 seconds or better in all three rounds. He won the first go-round with a 4.5, posted a three-day time of 13.9 seconds and left with $7,750.

And he had to be good just to survive.

Brothers Cody Cassidy and Curtis Cassidy, the last two Houston champions, were in his bracket, along with former champs Wade Sumpter (2008), Jule Hazen (2007) and Ronnie Fields (2005).

Of the five champs in the series, only two moved on: Sumpter and Curtis Cassidy, the 2009 Houston winner. Cody Cassidy became the second defending champ eliminated before the semifinals.

Sumpter shared the win in the third go-round with Graves and finished second in the aggregate with $4,750.

Team roping header Turtle Powell, who won Houston last year with Cory Petska, joined barrel racer Sherry Cervi, who qualified in Super Series II, as the only reigning champs who’ve already advanced. (read more)

Dec. 20, 2010 – Home never looked better. As excited as I was about qualifing for the Wrangler National Finals, I also knew that the timing wasn’t great for me. I, and my horses, weren’t ready. It’s one thing to be competitive in July, but to try to get your “game” to its highest level in just thrre or four weeks wasn’t realistic. I was extremely hopeful, and knew our potential, but to think that you are going to compete with the best riders and horses in the world, well, that’s another thing. I was disappointed, but not overly so. I know we have a lot of work to do before the season gets rolling again in January.

Thanks to Wrangler, Dodge, Las Vegas Events, the WPRA, the PRCA and the NFR crew for all their hard work and support for the NFR. The barrel race was extremely exciting, and the fans loved it. Thanks to the WPRA for all the awards, and to Circle Y Saddlery for the saddle.

Thanks to all of you who cheered for me and support me in the good times and the not so good. You’ll never know how much your encouragement means to me. Thanks to Professional’s Choice, Total Health Enhancement, EquiPride, Cowboy Rigs, SpurRadio, and now, MAXX Sunglasses for their support. My family does so much for me, especially Marty. I couldn’t do this without him. Well, as I said, I have a lot of work to do, so I better get to it.

Remember God gave us the greatest gift, His son, Jesus; so that we could have a relationship with Him. If you don’t know Him, this season would be a great time to get to know Him. We are here because of His love, share that love with someone else. Merry Christmas.

The Fresh Air Fund is in need of host families for this summer. Host families are volunteers who open their hearts and home to a child from the city to give them a Fresh Air experience that can change lives. If you could help to get the word out it would really help us place these wonderful children into a loving host family. It’s only for up to two weeks, but it’s an experience that can change their life.

Please visit their website and learn more about how you can change a childs life!

May 24, 2010 – Although I didn’t compete in but one rodeo, this weekend was packed full. My son, Brodie, and I competed in the slack Thursday morning at Ada. It was great to have a pro rodeo back at the Ken Lance arena. It was also great that the tornado that was just west of there didn’t make it to the grounds! Lots of rain and some hail hit late Wednesday, so the arena was really sloppy for slack.

Claremore, one of my two hometown rodeos, will be welcoming rodeo contestants to the Will Rogers Stampede this weekend. As part of the rodeo week, Friday and Saturday the Roundup Club hosted a WPRA barrel race. Even with the rain we’d had the ground was pretty good, we even kicked up dust on Saturday. The vendors started arriving this weekend, and the committee has begun in earnest, getting the arena grounds ready for the big event. Wednesday night Marty and I will be attending a barbeque for the sponsors and steer roping enthusiasts. Thursday morning, rodeo slack will start at 9 am with the barrel racers, followed at 1 by the men’s events. I believe that the steer roping and tie-down roping will be at 7 pm, so it will probably be an all-day event for me.

The rodeo performances start Friday night a 7:30. I will be competing Saturday night in the performance so I invite all my friends to come cheer me on that night. I’d love to win in front of the hometown crowd!! (Goose and I have been working very hard on that.) Sunday evening will start off with a concert by Susie McEntire for a Christian Cowboy Celebration.  The people in Claremore are working very hard to put on a top notch pro rodeo for the people of Will Rogers home stompin grounds, so come and enjoy!!

Rick Furnish manages a ranch near Guymon, Okla.

He also owns one of the community’s popular taverns, Bob’s Cowboy Bar and Rodeo Room.

He’s of the firm belief that professional rodeo’s world all-around champion should have to compete in both a riding and timed event to qualify for the title.

Such is the case in Canada, by the way.

“In my opinion, we (the Americans) don’t have a true all-around champion,” Furnish said. “You can be the best roper in the world or the best rider, but you can’t be the all-around champion until you can do things at both ends of the arena.’’

On the world stage, the all-around title goes to the cowboy who has won the most money competing in any two or more events.

For the past decade, cowboys who work the team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling and/or steer roping have dominated.

The last world all-around champion to compete in both a roughstock and timed event was Texan Phil Lyne in 1972. He rode bulls and roped calves.

This weekend, the annual Pioneer Days Rodeo returns to Guymon and Furnish has managed to create what is called the Classic Events Championship.

“Steer roping and bronc riding are the two oldest events in rodeo, but there are timed-event guys and riding-event guys,” he said. “You’ve never had a crossover where you had to rope so many and you had to ride so many to be a champion. (read more and photo credit)

Hello Ontherodeoroad.com fans,

So far this year I havent rodeo’d as much as I have in years past, but I have started something that will defiantly help me when I do start to hit the road hard in a few weeks. I started some serious condition training with some Mixed Martial Arts fighters at Battleground Fight Academy in Sedalia, MO. Last summer while I was hurt Brandy purchased P90X workout videos, I did the first couple DVD’s but I couldn’t get motivated to work out at home. I have been in and out of the gym since I was in high school, for some reason I can get motivated to drive to the gym but can’t get motivated to workout at home. So after a few failed attempts to workout at home, I started working out at Brian’s Gym in Sedalia. After a few weeks of working out, I started asking about the Battleground Fight Academy which is at the same place the gym is. I am a fan of UFC and other MMA associations, and have always found it very interesting the training regimens that these guys (and girls) do to stay in prime fighting condition. I have been wanting to train and condition like them, because I know that it can definitely help me with saddle bronc riding. The better shape I am in physically and mentally, the better I ride and more I win, and I like winning. After talking to Brian of Brian’s Gym, we worked out a deal with Battleground Fight Academy, for me to condition and train with them. The first conditioning class was a real eye opener. Like I mentioned before, I have been in and out of the gym since high school (I worked out for a few years then didn’t for a few years and then I would and then I wouldn’t, you get the idea). For the most part it has all been weight training, with a little cardio, and I mean little. The first session started with 500 jumping jacks (I haven’t done 500 in my whole life, so this was a challenge), then it proceeded to go into jumps and all sorts of plyometrics for the next hour with no breaks at all. I missed the second class of the week because it is on Wednesday and I was entered Montgomery, AL on Thursday, and I didn’t want to overdo it, since I am just starting. This was a good call because, I’m not gonna lie, my calves were sore for 6 days. The first session was about a month ago, and I do it twice a week, I don’t get as sore as I did in the beginning but sometimes I am still a little sore. I’m sure after a few more weeks of training I will be fine. I am still weight training in between the sessions at Battleground Fight Academy, so my body has been getting a rude awaking the last month or so, but it will all pay off. I really enjoy training with these guys, every session is something totally different and new. It all revolves around plyometrics, but with a twist. I went to a MMA fight a few weeks ago to watch a few guys from Battleground fight, including the conditioning instructor. Not only did the guys win quite handily, they were not exhausted at all. This just shows how awesome the conditioning and training is here. Since I have never been around MMA, or any of that, for now I am just sticking to the conditioning part of the training, I have sat in on some of the fight training and am looking forward to joining in soon, I also sat in on a boxing class they offer, I am planning on starting that as soon as I can. I don’t really have the desire to fight right now but I figure it can’t hurt to learn it. The coordination that comes with all the training is bound to help with me riding bucking horses, just as the conditioning is. I am looking forward to continued training and conditioning in the upcoming weeks. I would like to thank Brian’s Gym and Battleground Fight Academy for this awesome opportunity. You can check them out online or facebook if your interested in joining. Keep checking back to ontherodeoroad.com for more rodeo updates along with new training adventures.

God Bless,

Spencer
