“All the top guys have their specialties, and I guess mine probably would be the get-off — getting off your horse. That’s quite a rush.  Horses run anywhere from 15-25 miles per hour. You’re getting off going that fast.  That to me has always been the exciting part.”

But seven to eight years into his professional career, when Stran Smith was at the top of his game, he almost lost it all. (read more)

During the week of July 20-25, six Mandan high school students competed in the National High School Finals Rodeo, in Farmington, N.M. Many athletes from around the nation came to the rodeo to compete for a chance to win a national championship.

Casey Breuer, a soon-to-be senior at Mandan High School, came very close to winning a national championship in bareback riding. He took fourth overall in the event.

Throughout the weeklong rodeo, which included two rounds of competition and a short-go round for the top riders, Breuer got on the backs of three horses and stayed on all three of them for the full eight seconds.

Breuer got a score of 72 on his horse in the first round on Monday morning, and then Friday night got a score of 67 in the second round. During the third round short-go, he got a score of 75. Breuer won three belt buckles for his efforts at the rodeo. He won a buckle for having the best score, 72, in the round Monday morning. Then he received a buckle for making it into the short-go round and another for placing fourth overall.

When the rodeo was all over with, Breuer ended up standing only nine points behind the national winner, two points behind the second place rider and one behind third place. (read more)

Jesse Kruse has taken the bronc riding world by storm, so it was a little surprising the C.M. Russell High graduate wasn’t competing during Tuesday’s rainy opening night of the Big Sky Pro Rodeo Roundup.

The Great Falls man was there on Wednesday as the $93,000 rodeo continued in front of the grandstand at Montana ExpoPark. And several thousand rodeo fans discovered what all the fuss is about…(read more)

The prosecutor handling the investigation into the alleged theft and abuse of a Mitchell woman’s barrel-racing horse says the version of events that was reported early on in the media and on blogs was not accurate.

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Date, Rodeo Name and Location.
July 18, 2009. Davis Memorial Rodeo in Ringgold, Ga. PRCA.

Which horse did you run?
I ran the one and only…Biscuit. lol.

How was your warmup? Did you get there in plenty of time to get prepared?
We got there in plenty of time to do just about anything we wanted to do. ha. The warmup went well. He was fine for the first few minutes I was on him. Long trotted and acted like a complete gentleman…then he wanted to break off in to his lunatic act he pulls. When he starts acting like that, I know I have done something right. 🙂

How did you feel mentally?
Mentally, I was good to go. The night before, I had taken him to and open rodeo in Mississippi and ran him. He had a smoking run and outran a lot of nice horses by 3 tenths. I knew as long as I did my part, I could make a nice run. Usually if anything goes wrong, I can blame myself for it. He only listens to me.

Tell me about your run, the good the bad and the ugly. Exactly how you felt about it?
Our run was satisfactory to me. He ran really, really hard. Went blowing into the first and peeled the paint off of it. Second and third could have been a little bit prettier but he was flat out rolling and didn’t waste a whole lot of time at them. Didn’t run out as hard as he could have as it was a closed gate that ended in a pretty dark alley. Ya never know what kind of booger-bears can be hanging out in a place like that…especially when we were only there 15 seconds ago. lol.

How was the ground, alley, warm up area, etc?
The ground was a tad hard but he handled it like a champ. As far as the set up of the whole rodeo, I will be back for years to come. It’s an awesome rodeo with an amazing crowd. Where we warmed up was just a big, open field. Alley wasn’t all that long but it was decent.

Comments about the rodeo?
Very good rodeo. At the opposite end of the rodeo, there is a little old-timey looking town for the spectators. Very neat! Great, FREE food at the concession stand. Heck, they even fed my sweet little hauling partner, Callie (my aussie pup). There was a digital timer up which I love to see at a rodeo. This was a pretty good rodeo as far as competition. The last few holes they paid were stacked right on top of each other. All in all, I’ll be back next year. We didn’t make a lot of money but something is better than nothing. 🙂

Anything funny or out of the ordinary happen at this rodeo? (or did you see anything funny, hahah)
Oh gosh, this was one of the funniest trips I have taken lately. My cousin, who doesn’t rodeo, went with me, along with my crazy dog. We stopped in a little town in Alabama to eat at the smallest pizza place in the world. This place is proof that size doesn’t matter…the food was delicious but there was barely room enough for two booths to sit at!! lol. We let Biscuit off the trailer and Callie got to run around and chase a giant ROOSTER that actually scared her. Then, coming into Georgia, there was the scariest bridge I think I have ever crossed in my life. I had to lock the brakes up on the trailer to make it down the hill that led to the one way, two laned bridge that wasn’t quit up to code. lol. Then we led off into a little windy road that GPS so intelligently led us down. I believe we heard banjos playing. Thank goodness we left 5 hours early. 🙂 There were TONS and TONS of stories that I could tell you about this trip but I think I’ll save it for a rainy day.

Ashley Whyland on Luther

We loaded up and headed out to my first rodeo back in a LOOONNGGG time!  This was a bulls and barrels at a local county fair.  No big deal, but it was my horse’s first rodeo.  I was running Freckles, my boyfriend’s horse.  I have made a handful of runs on him, but he’s a lot different than what I’m used to running.

They opened the arena about 30 minutes before the rodeo was going to start and let us ride.  I could tell that Freckles was taking it all in, but was a little jazzed up about the atmosphere.  They had very loud music playing and it was a very small arena.  Behind the arena were the fair rides.  Directly behind the 3rd barrel was a HUGE Ferris Wheel (and I’m not exaggerating.)  Every spoke on that sucker was lit up like a slot machine!  It was a lot for a horse to take in and I knew it would only be worse when it started to get dark.

I was up in the slack, which I thought would be a good plan for my horse.  However, that put me to running in the dark.  I decided to let my horse rest up by the arena after I warmed him up.  I wanted him to get a GOOD look at that monstrous wheel that he was probably thinking was going to come unbolted and chase him.

After watching the performance I discovered the ground was VERY hard and not many horses were standing up on it.  Freckles is a big horse and I really wasn’t for sure how he was going to handle the ground.  It was also a small pattern.  Freckles has a very long stride, so I knew I could clock if I just got 3 clean barrels.  I let him cruise in and he nailed the first barrel, had a pretty good second and I had him lined up for the 3rd and then all of the sudden, he bolted right!  I decided to lope him out.

I wasn’t upset with Freckles, I felt like he handled it very well, considering!  I was also told that there was a bull barrel setting to the right of the 3rd barrel and that could have been what made him pick up and dart right!  There were a couple of other horses that did the exact same thing.

It is definitely challenging to go back to the rodeos and not be on a rodeo seasoned horse.  I guess things like the Ferris Wheel and things sitting in the arena are things that I took for granted before and I didn’t have to worry about them.

I would normally say “Off to the next one…”, but I’m not sure when the next one will be.  We haven’t bought any cards for this year, but I am contemplating buying my card back for next year!

(Sturgis, SD)AHL release-  The American Horse League on behalf of its membership in South Dakota and nationwide condemn the actions of the individuals who stole and abused a horse.  The horse belonged to South Dakota Cowgirl Wendy Halweg, and the American Horse League asks that the authorities do everything possible to find the offenders quickly and prosecute them for theft abuse and neglect.
Wendy Halweg and her Barrel Horse Dually were competing in the Ft. Pierre Rodeo at the Stanley County Fair Grounds over the weekend of the Fourth of July.  On Sunday morning, after competing, Wendy’s horse was stolen from the grounds and later found tied to a tree with extensive injuries.  The fate of this once extremely athletic horse is still unknown.
