Spencer Turner, Winning Ride at IFR 2009

 Date, Rodeo Name and Location
On Friday May 22 I Attended the American Heroes PRCA Rodeo in Braham, Minnesota

Which horse did you draw?
I drew horse 2B7 Young Again

Stock Contractor?

The Stock Contractor at Braham was MJM rodeos and Barnes PRCA rodeos they are the same outfit from Cherokee, Iowa

How was your horse in the chute?
He was OK. The tied a rope from the back of the chute to the front and ran it through the halter  to keep him from laying down and/or rearing up. When I got on him he acted like he wanted to lean on me pretty bad but I had some help and I got out on him pretty good.

Did you learn about the horse before hand?
I had actually got on this horse a couple weeks ago in St. Paul, Minnesota I knew he was a horse that I could place on in Braham.

Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would?
He came out and kinda got caught up in the rope they used to tie him in with but when he got free from that he was good. He kinda kicked flat out instead of kicking up and out, I think this cost me some points. I felt like I was riding him good, he didnt cover much ground at all and stayed right in front of the bucking chutes. I was setting my feet good and my feet were snappy and I was handling my rein very well. I was happy with the ride, except the fact he was kicking flat and not up in the air. I scored a 71 and was blessed enough to win a 4th place.

Comments about the rodeo? committee, hospitality, etc.
This was the first time I had been to the Braham rodeo. I liked it, the arena was very big but well taken care of, and Barnes Rodeo Company always had good bucking horses. The committee added $1200 in the Bronc riding and there were 17 bronc riders

Which horse did you run?
I ran Biscuit. He is my little 4 wheel drive muddin’ machine!!

How was your warmup? Did you get there in plenty of time to get prepared?
Warming up went great. He acted like a perfect gentleman. 🙂 Which is unusual for him. We had to warm up close to where my trailer was parked so my mare was at the trailer throwing a fit for him to come back. And my cute little dog was barking for me to come back.

How did you feel mentally?
Mentally, I was bummed because the night before, the perf’s ground was pretty trashy. Slick…not a wet slick, just a hard pan underneath what looked like decent ground. I think just about every horse slipped, tripped or fell. Slack was after the first perf and the ground wound up being really, really good. Over night, it came a flood so lucky me…I ran in knee deep mud without a chance at pulling a check!! IMAGINE THAT!!

Tell me about your run, the good the bad and the ugly. Exactly how you felt about it.
Our run was probably as good as it coulda gotten considering the conditions. I was supposed to be 2nd out but the girl in front of me turned out. Lucky me, I got to run first without seeing anyone else on the ground. I sent him in there NFR-style because I have faith in him!! It was sticky but he was trying his heart out to get through it. Little legs + lots of mud = Me and Biscuit in Jackson, Tn! Anyways, he coulda got a little closer to the 2nd but it wouldn’t have mattered. He tried his best and didn’t clock too bad either. I think a 14.6 won it. Jewels Denapoli with an AWESOME run in slack and we ran a 15.6 in the stinkin’ nasty mud. We were that fastest time in our perf, right behind Marne Loosenort with a 15.5. You cant be mad at that. I wanna say the last whole that got paid was a mid 15. Not too bad but still not paying the fuel bill!!  🙂

How was the ground, alley, warm up area, etc?
MUD, MUD, and more MUD. This is the 3rd rodeo in the month of May that the ground has been the reason for getting beat. It’s hard to compete with girls that have perfect dry ground the night before and you have to run in a mud hole! But hey, that’s rodeo!!

Warmup area is just in between trailers and small openings here and there. There wasn’t really an alley, just wide open, that’s Biscuit’s style there.

Comments about the rodeo?
The rodeo was pretty good all in all. I can’t complain about anything.

Anything funny or out of the ordinary happen at this rodeo? (or did you see anything funny, hahah)
There wasn’t really anything out of the ordinary that happened on this trip. I had left home the night before to stay with a friend of mine that lives in town and we went to watch the first perf and slack the night before our run. We had a great time!! And managed to stay out of trouble!! 🙂

Spencer Turner, Winning Ride at IFR 2009

Date, Rodeo Name and Location
Thursday May 14th I attended the Franklin Rodeo in Franklin, Tennessee

Which horse did you draw?
I drew a big bay mare branded 145 and called Faded Charm

Stock Contractor?
The horse I drew came from the J-J string but Gold Buckle was the primary contractor at the rodeo

How was your horse in the chute?
She was standing OK. She is a big horse so she took up a lot of the chute. They put a neck rope on her and tied her in just in case she decided to try something

Did you learn about the horse before hand?
I had heard she was an outstanding bareback horse. They switched her over to the saddle bronc riding and she apparently has been really rank. At Fort Worth they marked her a 23 (out of a possible 25) the contractor said. I was super excited to have her, knowing I could win the rodeo if I did my part.

Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would?
When I nodded she came out of the chute pretty hard then she started bucking real great and I was riding her pretty good too. After a few seconds she lost her footing and started to stumble and I thought she was going to flip head over feet. I laid back and waited for her to gather her footing. When she did she exploded extremely high in the air and I spurred her hard. She then proceeded to just get stronger and kick and buck hard. She didn’t cover much ground which is good. I thought I rode her really well. By the sounds of the crowd and the announcer and the guys on the back of the chutes, they thought so too. I got off on the pick-up man was extremely happy. When you ride good and the horse is that good it makes you feel like a million bucks. The down side to the whole thing is that the judge threw a flag on me and disqualified me for missing my mark out. The mark out rule is a rule in place to give the animal the advantage. The rule states the riders spurs must be in contact with the horse in the neck and above the break of the shoulder when the horses front feet hit the ground after leaving the chute. The judge said that when she came out of the chute my spur was in the right place but when she hit the ground but my foot didn’t stay and it fell down a slight bit. I was disappointed because I knew I just spurred a bad bronc and I wanted to win the rodeo. But all in all I am still happy that I was blessed enough to ride her and I am extremely blessed and give all the Glory to God for giving me the talent and opportunity to rodeo.

Comments about the rodeo? committee, hospitality, etc.
The rodeo committee is great and they provide great food for the contestants. The rodeo added $3500 in the saddle bronc riding and is a very good rodeo I think.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event in Conway this weekend may feature many male contestants, but there’s still a strong showing of cowgirls.

In fact, there are 68 entires in barrel racing, the lone female event. That’s more than three times the amount of last year’s inaugural rodeo at the Don Owen Sports Complex.

“I’m tickled to death with the field we have,” said PRCA committee chair Nikki Murdock. “We’ve got former world champions, people who have been in several (National Finals Rodeo events) and many good cowgirls. … There’s a good crowd here just to watch these cowgirls.” (read more)

Date, Rodeo Name and Location
On May 9th I attended the Espernanza Bonanza Festival Rodeo in Marion, Arkansas it was an IPRA rodeo

Which horse did you draw?
 I drew L9 a big paint horse

Stock Contractor?
MFJ rodeo productions owned by Mark Johnson

How was your horse in the chute?
He wasn’t too bad but they tied him in just for precaution because he has been bad in the past

Did you learn about the horse before hand?
I had seen the horse before and knew he was pretty bucky. Mark told me he bucked off an NFR cowboy at Cheyenne last year (Mark also puts on PRCA rodeos)

Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would?
The horse stalled a little bit in the chute and then came out pretty hard and bucked really good for a few seconds. The arena was muddy and had water in it so maybe that had an effect of why during the last few seconds bucked different. He kinda threw a wild horse fit, rearing up and turning back. My saddle seemed a little tight (my stirrups were a little short) so I didn’t spur him like I could have but I was still blessed to be 76 points and win a good chunk of change for placing 2nd.

Comments about the rodeo? Committee, hospitality, etc.
he rodeo added $700 in the saddle bronc riding and the committee was very friendly and had an awesome hospitality tent for us. I am thankful to the Lord for keeping all the animals and contestants safe this weekend. Because of all the rain the arenas were very muddy and slick but no animal or person fell and or was injured.

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Date, Rodeo Name and Location
5/15/2009 Franklin, TN. PRCA rodeo.

Which horse did you run?
I ran Biscuit. I need to find me a 16 hand giant if we decide to go next year. This arena is not “Biscuit-friendly”.

How was your warmup? Did you get there in plenty of time to get prepared?
The warm up was great. We had plenty of time to get ready. I think that had a lot to do with it. Biscuit works better if you just hop on him and go.

How did you feel mentally?
Mentally, I was ok. I was a little concerned about the ground seeing as how this was the arena that we fell at last year. He handles all ground great and safteys up on his own most of the time when he needs to. Here, he went all the way down because the ground shifted out from under him. But like every run, I try not to think about what has happened before. Every run is a different trip!

Tell me about your run, the good the bad and the ugly. Exactly how you felt about it.
Well, he was fired up and ready to go. On his back feet that whole way down the LONG, LONG alley, I was trying to hold him up so we didn’t repeat last years run!! Anyways, we go hauling booty in, he sets up, kinda bobbles on the first (all that went through my mind was “Here we go again!!”). Anyways, he recovers, heads to the second, and passes it by a stride! NOT GOOD! The whole run, he looked like Fred Flinstone driving a car. His legs were moving but he wasn’t going anywhere. 🙂 Gets to the third, sets up and eases on out. Can we say…WASTE OF MONEY!!

How was the ground, alley, warm up area, etc?
The ground…not my favorite but I’m sure there were plenty of girls that didn’t have a problem with it. The alley is long and the warm up arena was great. I’m glad they had it opened this year.

Comments about the rodeo?
This is a rodeo that I will definitely miss next year just because my horse doesn’t work well here. The only way I will go back is if someone else does the ground or I have a different horse worth running.

Anything funny or out of the ordinary happen at this rodeo? (or did you see anything funny, hahah)
Well, going up and down the road is always fun. Some friends of mine met us up there and stayed with us most of the weekend. Well, after a night at O’Charleys, we head back to the hotel room to get some rest. We get in the parking lot, make a u-turn in a tight, tight spot and drive up a hill sideways. Now we are in a new Hummer and I’m in the back seat. I just knew that truck was going to flip!! It was sliding sideways down the hill!! Eek…

There were several things that happened that were so, so funny but I can’t seem to remember them right now.
