Another Reno Rodeo is in the books. For many of the competitors, they’ll do just about anything for a chance to win. Even if it means going into the arena, injured.

To make it to the national rodeo finals, you have to be a top money-maker. And to make money, you have to compete and win.

“I ended up winning the first round,” Lindsay Sears. (read more)

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

My most memorable run…that is really tough to decide. It’s hard when you have so many that you just really like. But here goes one. We were at a PRCA in my hometown of Memphis, Tn. There wasn’t anything different about that day except the fact the Biscuit ran harder in that pen than he has ever ran. The meaner and crankier that horse is before a run, the harder he runs. I wanna say that this was the same day I chased him for 30 minutes trying to catch him. It’s a big game we play. If he could talk, he would call it “Let’s not let momma catch me”! Anyways, we were at the bottom of the ground and it was starting to get deep about the 4th or 5th horse. I was 8th out, I believe. Short legs plus deep ground…not a good combo. Ha! Anyways, he goes hauling down the alley, sucks up three cans and the crowd got louder after each turn. He feeds off of that!! A slight bow off of the 3rd barrel and out…the announcer thinks we are about to change the time. We didn’t but was very close. The only bad news was there was a whole other performance the next night. I had to sit through that nail biting experience. I was hanging on to 2nd. After that performance was over, I was still sitting 2nd, filled my permit and put a nice little check in my pocket. Needless to say, I was tickled!!

Did you know about the Horse?
I didn’t know anything about the horse. He was a young horse and that is all I knew.

Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would? The horse jumped out of the gate and was a bit weak. After about four jumps he got fast and long and then got weak towards the end. I did spur him very well and I scored a 77. I got second.

The other riggin has really made a difference in my riding.

Spencer Turner, Winning Ride at IFR 2009

Spencer Turner, Winning Ride at IFR 2009

So remember when I said that I thought my foot looked like it was healing fast and I would be back at the end of July, even though the doctor said it would be August before I could even walk on it?  Well turns out I was right! I waited 4 weeks, which I thought was plenty of time to heal the bones, and I contacted a sports medicine guy in Iowa that I have used before and who several friends have used. I told him my story and what the doctor in KC said, he told me to come up and he would look at it. On Friday June 19th, I went and saw him. He looked at the x-rays they took when it happened 4 weeks ago and told me things the other doctor never told me. He said that, yes my foot was broken, yes the joint was crushed, but he also said that my foot was WAY out of alignment. All the little joints in my foot were out of whack, and not where they should be. I asked him about the tendons and ligaments, he checked them and said that they aren’t too bad and really shouldn’t have a problem with them. He could tell that I heal fast and was way ahead of schedule, I told him I have been taking AquaOxygen for the last year and when I got hurt I doubled my intake to help heal. He told me it was definitely working and to continue to take it. He also put me on some herbal pills to help break up the blood in my foot and the gel like stuff that was making my foot still swollen. He adjusted my foot to start realigning the joints and bones (which kinda really hurt). He put some stuff on my foot then used this little handheld clicker machine like you seen used on backs by chiropractors. After all that he told me to walk across the room. I was a little leery, but I did it and even stood with all the weight on that foot. He then used a machine that sends pulsing waves into my foot to also help with speeding recovery. He told me to not use the crutches anymore and just use the walking/boot cast when I am going somewhere. He told me to walk barefoot around the house (which is many months before the other doc said). I was also told to start riding a stationary bike and using a cross training machine and to get back into shape like I was. He said the better cardio shape I am in the better my blood flows which in turn will clean out the blood and gel from my foot. He said that as fast as I am healing that I should be back to slowly running and lightly jumping and even rodeoing again by mid to end of July. That is great news! I knew I would not be out as long as the other doctor said. I am glad I decided to wait till bones healed and then go to this sports medicine guy in Iowa, he has a totally different way at looking at injuries. I am going to stay in Iowa for a couple weeks, or longer if needed, to continue to use the pulsing machine everyday and getting my foot aligned back and getting in shape. Stay tuned to ontherodeoroad.com for more updates.

Did you know about the Horse?
I saw this horse at the UT Martin College rodeo in April, won the last round on him. He is a good horse just young.

Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would? This horse stood really well in the chute.  He blew out and had two good jumps and I was spurring him good. He moved on a bit and then started jumping in one spot for about 3 jumps and then circled around to the right. I really go in sync with him and just had a really good ride. I scored an 84 on this ride and split first! This is the type of ride that reminds you why you do this every day, this was a great ride.

This is a really good rodeo. The weather was great and the crowd was big. They had a nice hospitality tent, just a good fun rodeo!

When your horse starts giving you problems, is there one person in particular that you may call on to bounce ideas off of or help you fix the issue? Tell us about them!  Me and my friend Lindsey Hostetler talk to each other a lot about our runs.  We critique each other and give ideas to help each other.  Of course, my boyfriend, John Brown, even if I don’t ask, he’ll tell me what I’m doing wrong!  Haha!

What type of saddle do you prefer to ride in? All girls have their preference!  I love my Cactus!  It’s the Charmayne James saddle and it fits me great and fits most of my horses!

We asked about your most memorable run, not tell us about your most embarrassing.  That would probably be when my ex-horse Chris turned the 3rd barrel and I gave him his head and he just kept on turning.  Then ran to the fence and the barrel setters where all standing there.  They all jumped up and scaled the fence and the whole crowd was laughing…

Do you get nervous before each rodeo run?  If you aren’t nervous, you aren’t human.  No seriously, I think it isn’t fun anymore when you’re not nervous.  Of course, the more comfortable you are with your horse, the less nervous you are.

 Which horse did you run?

Well I questioned whether to run at all b/c the ground looked AWFUL (see below) but I Ran JB Absolute aka Abby…

How was the ground, alley, warm up area, etc?

So this was my 3rd year going to this rodeo.  The arena is set up in the middle of a field and all they do is plow up the field.  The 1st year I had Mighty Mouse and the ground was hard mixed with grass and I won 2nd.  Last year they didn’t even dig it up the 1st day so Rookie and I ran on grass and ended up 3rd.  This year they had decided to dig it up the Monday before the rodeo WHILE it was raining and then it continued to rain all week which made it the biggest mud hole I HAVE EVER SEEN.  They had tried to disc it and just kept burying the tractors in it.  About half the girls turned out the 1st night.  When I got there Saturday morning I was hoping the sun would dry it out some but it wasn’t drying it out fast enough.  The 1st barrel did dry out some and they ran the tractor over it a few times just to let the tires pack it down.  As far the alley way goes they just open up panels for us to run through at this rodeo as well and we warm up in the middle of the field.

How did you feel mentally?

To run or not to run?  That was the question.  I knew the owner would leave it up to my judgement but luckily I drew 9th out so I had a chance to watch the other girls run before.  I also paid close attention to the horses in the other events to see how they were handling the ground as well.   I knew if I was going to run I had to commit to it 100% to get her through it and be confident on her.  She was very scared in grand entry and didn’t want to walk through the water and was trying to jump over the ruts.

Tell me about your run, the good the bad and the ugly. Exactly how you felt about it?  After watching the girls ahead of me go I decided to run and just make sure I was confident on her but to let her pick her spots and try to keep her in the ruts where it was more packed down.  She was VERY nervous going in and was running a little scared to the 1st… I bumped her once and she came right back to me having an AWESOME first barrel.  The 2nd barrel was made up of 2 or 3 ruts so I pushed her into one and let her follow it all the way around the barrel.  It wasn’t the prettiest 2nd barrel but the safest way around it.  Going to the 3rd was where the water was sitting and it was VERY muddy.  Abby kinda of just jumped and hopped through it.  She stuck a little bit in the mud at the 3rd so I just tried to guide her around.  She ran out hard and we won 2nd!!  The times for this rodeo were all over the place.  1st place was a 15.4 then me with a 15.8 last hole was a 17.1 which is crazy for there to be that big of a spread lol

Comments about the rodeo?

I normally really like this rodeo.  They add $1,000 to each event which makes it worth going to and normally the ground is not like that.  I would suggest for the committee to leave the ground alone next year until the day of the rodeo to avoid ground conditions like that in the future.

Anything interesting happen on the trip there or back?

This rodeo was only 1 hour from the rodeo the day before so it was pretty smooth sailing from one to the other.  The drive home also went smoothly suprisingly 🙂  Memphis and I had a good weekend. He of course is always making new friends and he is very happy that rodeo season is getting into full swing!!

Which horse did you run?
Soo Originally I was gonna to take Mighty Mouse and Abby on this weekend rodeo run, but something came up and I just ended up taking Abby.

How was the ground, alley, warm up area, etc?
The ground at this rodeo is either a muddy mess or hard as a rock…last year on Friday night it was a muddy mess and then hard hard hard on Saturday when I ran…this year they did a good job keeping the ground hard with all the rain they got so it was not muddy at all when we ran.  There isn’t really an alley way at this rodeo they just open up two of the end panels and let us run through them.

Tell me about your run, the good the bad and the ugly. Exactly how you felt about it.
So Abby felt a little funny warming her up but I could not pinpoint exactly what I thought was off.  She had cut her nose pretty bad during the week and I thought maybe she was just being funny b/c of that.  I was 8th out to run so I got to watch alot of other runs go before me to see how the ground was holding up.  I was 2nd at this rodeo last year on Rookie and wanted to do well again this year.  The ground was hard as usual but looked good so I sent her.  She inhaled the 1st barrel and went across the pen hard.  I got a little handsy at the 2nd so she pulled off a tiny bit but was lined up going to the 3rd and had a decent 3rd barrel as well.  She ran REALLY hard home and a couple of the girls commented how Abby just hit another gear.  They were winning it with a 15.2 which is what I ran last year and I ran a 14.8 on Abby to take over the lead!!  I ended up 3rd overall after Saturdays perf was over but was tickled to death with her.  A 14.7 won it and there was another 14.8 just a little faster then mine.  I called the owners and they were very happy even though I called them at 11:00pm their time lol  This was also the 1st IPRA money I won of the year as well!!

Comments about the rodeo?
I really like this rodeo.  They add $1,000 to the barrel racing and there is a live band and dance after each perf.  They also offer $100 bonus to the winner of each performance which is great for outside rodeos since you never know if the ground will change.

Anything interesting happen on the trip there or back?
I had planned on leaving for this rodeo around noon on Friday so I would get there nice and early and get a good parking spot.  Well I didn’t up leaving till around 2:00pm which was gonna put me there around starting time.  I had to put a tire back on my trailer that had flew off of it going down the road a few weeks earlier and when I went to the hardware store to get lug nuts they gave me the wrong size!!  SO I had to go back and get the right size…I am very paranoid about tires on my truck and trailer so I was constantly stopping to check and see if the lug nuts were still tight lol.  So I stopped at a gas station to get money out of the ATM and check the lug nuts.  Lug Nuts were fine and I go in to get $200 out…well my receipt said that the machine had giving me $200 but it only gave me $120!  I was getting nervous about being late for the rodeo and all the gas station lady could do was give me the banks phone number to clear it up with them…so I left with $80 less then I had intended and got to the rodeo as it was starting!

Nothing can keep Lea Jacobs from riding horses.

Not even a vehicle accident paralyzing her from the waist down in November 2006.

“When I couldn’t ride after the accident, it felt like forever,” Jacobs said.

Only about a year after breaking her back, then going through four months of physical therapy, two surgeries and having steel rods put in her back, the Akron woman was back in the saddle.

Her first ride — Sept. 4, 2007….(read more)
