Hey Everybody!

Guinness and I were talking about our “guilty pleasures” when it comes to spending money on our horses? What is yours??  Mine is blankets. I have blankets and coolers for all of my horse and here is the kicker; I rarely ever use them! Yet, every year I go looking at the “deals” I can find. How crazy, right?

Guinness’ guilty pleasure is headstalls. Since we haul together I can verify that this is true!  There are WAY too many headstalls in the trailer!!! haha!!

So what is yours?? Saddle Pads? Polos? SMB Boots? Halters?  Saddles??  WHAT??? Tell ME! 🙂

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is pro rodeo’s version of the Super Bowl – except the event runs 10 consecutive days.

Rodeo’s big in the north state, but not many area cowboys make it to Las Vegas in December for the NFR as contestants.

This year, that’s changed thanks to 22-year-old Justin Davis of Cottonwood.

The NFR takes the top 15 competitors in each event from the world standings, which are based on money earned from rodeos in a given year.

Davis grabbed the 15th and final spot in team roping for heelers to punch his Las Vegas ticket when the 2009 season ended in mid-October. Davis had been ranked around 10th through 12th for much of the early part of the year before coming near the bubble.

But, he racked up $55,315 as the tail end of a team roping duo, beating out Britt Bockius by slightly more than $4,000 for the 15th spot.

So Davis is headed to Las Vegas’s Thomas & Mack Center for 10 rounds in 10 days from Thursday through Dec. 12. Most of the rounds are scheduled to air live on ESPN Classic.

“It’s pretty cool to go,” Davis said Tuesday. “Kind of being the local boy does good angle.” (read more)

Amber Mostoller on Mighty Mouse

So where do I start??  First off, I would like to apologize for the lack of updates this summer.  It has been CCRRAAAZZZYY to say the least.  I got a new traveling partner at the end of July (Sherry Sunden) and when I say we traveled….we TRAVELED.  There was anywhere between 2-7 people with us on the weekends, and we went from IL, IN, MI all the way to St Gabriel, Quebec (which for those of you who do not know where that is… I mean how could you not (YEAH RIGHT) its all the way ABOVE MAINE in Quebec.  We visited Quebec three or four times from the end of July till September which ended with the best rodeo ever in St Tite, QC.

I ran JB Absolute aka Abby all summer and she continued to amaze me with her grit and her heart.  There were many rodeos that we pulled into as the barrels were getting ready to start after long hours on the trailer and she consistantly would draw me a check.  I did jump on a good friend of mine (Teresa Quay) horses a few times to let Abby rest and did well. Up through Labor Day weekend I won $7155.87 which had put me securely in the Top 15 of the IPRA World Standings.  Over half that had come from the end of July till Labor Day weekend.  I knew I still had some HUGE rodeos the following weekend of Sept 11-13th and then of course St. Tite.  I had made the short go in St-Tite every year I have been up there and was confident that with the way Abby was working I would do so again.

Well they say all good things must come to an end and that it did when we got to the first rodeo in McDonough, GA Sept 11th.  We pulled in very late the night before and built pens for the horses.  The next morning I left very early to visit my grandpa who lived three hours away who was dying of cancer.  I received a phone call that afternoon that Abby had gotten loose and her back left leg was swollen and she couldn’t walk.  When I finally got back to the fairgrounds and the vet got there, he diagnosed her with a SEVERELY inflamed and bowed tendon in the back end, but said that she would need re ultrasounded in a couple weeks once the swelling went down to make sure.  Regardless she could not be ridden and my weekend was done before it even got started.  The owner of Abby at the time lived very close to McDonough and his daughter was entered that night, so he went ahead and took Abby home.

I considered just getting a plane ticket home, but knew I could not vet out of St Tite and had to pay my fees anyway.  I decided to go on and help Sherry drive if nothing else and show her the ropes up there as she had never been before.  The experience of St Tite is always fun, although my runs up there were a disaster on the horse I borrowed lol.

After St Tite, I just prayed that the money I had won in the short 3 months on Abby would hold up to make the IFR.  I figured if it did hold up that it was meant to be and if not…well we would try again next year.  The season is now over and I ended up 14th in the year end standings and will be headed to my 3rd consecutive IFR 🙂

After St Tite, I got back Docs Idaho Gold aka Mighty Mouse back to ride for a little while to sell!!  (I sold this mare at the IFR in 2008 and she just keeps finding her way back to me)   Stay tuned for “THE ADVENTURES OF MIGHTY MOUSE”  coming soon!!  🙂

Hello Ontherodeoroad.com fans!

This weekend I attended the PRCA Great Lakes Circuit Finals in Louisville, KY. I was surprised I qualified for the finals, so I wasn’t mentally or physically prepared, since I haven’t really rodeo’d all year because of injuries. I went with high expectations anyway and stayed positive all weekend. The first round I had H14 Air Guitar of Joe Simon Rodeo Company. I knew this horse, I placed on him in Sedalia at the PRCA rodeo in February. He came out of the chute and didn’t buck real well, he kinda lunged around and then spun in a circle almost stopping. I scored a 50 with and option for a rer0ide. I chose to take the reride. The reride horse was 497 Blood Stain of Three Hills Rodeo company. He was a good sized paint horse that the other cowboys said was good. He bucked fairly well but I just couldn’t get things going well on him. I had a little difficulty spurring him and staying in control. I scored 72, but was satisfied that I got one covered in the first round of Finals. The second round I had 18 Candy Man from Joe Simon Rodeo Company. They cowboys told me he was a big bay horse that was gonna give me some trouble in the chutes and rear out and around the post. After that he was supposed to be good. They told me he bucked with his head down and I was told to let him have a lot of rein. He wasn’t to awful bad in the chute and when I nodded he did rear out. He bucked really, really hard and kicked way over his head, but he never put his head down, and bucked with it up in the air. Since I had heard he bucked with his head down, I gave him lots of rein, but he bucked with it high in the air this time. I had way too much rein and couldn’t ride him well like that and we parted ways and I scored a 0. Even though everybody told me he bucked with a lot of rein and I gave him a lot of rein, when he didn’t put his head down and I bucked off, I wasn’t upset at all. Horses, just like any other animal, can be unpredictable. Some horses buck different indoors and outdoors. I was disappointed but not upset at all. Everything happens for a reason. In the third round I drew D19 Pretty Boy. I had never seen the horse but had heard about him. I heard he would be outstanding. Jump and kick high and buck really great. I also heard he might have a few moves at first but the line out and be great. I was excited to have him drawn. I was pretty relaxed before I got on him. I crawled down in the chute and nodded my head. He came out and was very strong. He kicked over his head and then ducked to the right then to the left and then back to right all the while kicking high and bucking good. I was riding and spurring him good considering all the moves he had. He was getting me a little out of shape, but I would recover and spur him some more. Eventually he got me so far out of shape that he threw me over his head and I scored a 0. I believe I could have rode him through all the moves but he was bucking so strong and hard and that made it difficult. He just got the better of me today, but I’m positive we will meet again and there will be a different outcome, in my favor this time. I didn’t have the good weekend that I was expecting and hoping for, but The Lord has plans and a reason for everything. I am still happy with the way I rode considering I wasn’t ready and didn’t prepare for the Finals like I normally would of. Being hurt all year and not going anywhere, took a toll on me. Things will definitely be different next time I nod my head .

I hope the rodeo road finds all of you in good health and great spirits! Until next time, God Bless
