So a few of the girls and I decided to enter a little open rodeo in Coffeeville, MS. We had been to a barrel race in Tennessee earlier that day where Biscuit and I won the adult and wound up 2nd in the 1D in the open. He was feeling good and showing off!! 🙂 My little mare even ran good, so I was feeling on top of our game. Anyways, we were running a little behind time getting on the road to head to Mississippi. My trailer had a flat and we had to make a detour to drop some horses off at a friend’s barn, pick up some other horses and another girl, then head south. While we were on our way to the rodeo and about 30 minutes behind schedule…we call the “boss man” of the rodeo company and told him we had three blondes in one rig and we needed him to stall for us!! haha. After many, many laughs and probably too much fun on the way to the rodeo, we finally made it. Jump out of the truck, paid our fees and saddled horses. I had two to saddle because I had plans on exhibitioning my mare afterwards. Plus, my mare is the best “warm up” for Biscuit. This way I don’t even have to step on Biscuit until we are running down the alley way…which he loves!! Cookie wasn’t loving the bulls, the bucking chutes, the loud music…NONE OF IT! This literally was her first rodeo! haha. This pen is kinda small, really sandy and really dry. The barrels are kinda hidden and it’s a short, short alley. A 14.9 was winning it (one of the girls in our trailer) and with us passing the first a little and bowing off the third, we wound up one hole out of getting paid with a 15.3. It was a tough little rodeo with the times stacked on top of each other and I was proud of my guy. It had been a long day. The other girl in our rig caught a barrel to be 2nd with a 15.0. 😦 Cookie and I didn’t make the most of our exhibition…but there is always next time. She has A LOT to learn but she’s doing so great!! The rest of the night was fantastic. Lots of laughs with the girls and made a safe trip home. That’s really all you can ask for…and I thank the Lord for that.

Well, it’s been a little slow down here for me as far as rodeo’n but I’ve got enough going on to keep me busy. 🙂 Biscuit has been running really strong for me at the barrel races and I bought a new mare that I’m taking to see the sights and she is coming along really nicely for me. There are still some “boogers” and rough edges that we need to clean up with her, but that will all come with time and miles. Other than showing Cookie some of the sights, I’ve been riding a few colts for a guy in Mississippi along with selling a few others here and there along the way. My stud, Gravy (by Magnolia Bar Jet), which is Biscuit’s little brother has been introduced to a new “girlfriend” which we are hoping is in foal for a Fall 2011 baby. We are keeping our fingers crossed as this will be a phenomenal cross if all goes well. My intentions right now are to get Gravy going really well and in the meantime, he will be standing at stud at my grandparents farm in North Mississippi. I’m so excited about this colt as he has a ton of athletic ability and the brains and looks to go along with it. He’s the total package right now. 🙂 Hopefully he can fill his big brother’s shoes when he is no longer able to run for me. It will be tough, but someone’s gotta do it. Callie (my mini-aussie) is still the best “hauling partner” that I can ask for. She is always so willing to hop in the truck to go with me and never ask any questions. hehe.
We are headed to a barrel race here in our hometown this Saturday, then to a rodeo in Mississippi Saturday night. I haven’t decided who I’m gonna run down there yet. It’s going to be really hard to get off of Biscuit since this is his kind of pen. Small, indoor, barrels set on the fence with decent ground under us. Cookie will atleast be exhibitioned to see this pen because it’s a lot different that what she has been seeing lately. In the meantime, good luck to everyone that’s getting ready for the winter rodeos and the finals!! Safe travels!!!!

This is one of those rodeos we enter every year with very little success when it comes to paying out money. The pen really isn’t Biscuit’s kind of place. The barrels are usually set pretty far off the fence and he is a horse that needs a fence for the first barrel atleast. Well, he either needs a fence to bounce off of or for me to ride him like I should instead of pretending he is “Mr. Automatic”!! 🙂 I had my game plan going just as I wanted. I WANTED to send him in there easy, wrap the first and then hard the rest of the way. But instead, I send him in the pen from the “back forty”, thinking “this is not a good idea!! He’s not gonna sit down and turn!!!!” But he suprised me, put his butt in the red, sandy clay mix and sat down and turned. Pushed on through the rest of it, coming off the 3rd a little wide and cut the clock off that was good enough for 2nd. A 15.73 won it and we ran a 15.77. Things couldn’t get much closer than that. We were so happy to finally pull a check in this pen, especially since my grandparents got to make the trip to watch us run!! 🙂

Philadelphia, Ms. PRCA July 25

Well, well, well…this is the rodeo that will go down in the history books as “The run that broke my heart”. It can be considered my 2nd favorite rodeo, being a close second to Memphis. The past two years we have ran here he has placed. First year we brought home a 3rd place check and the 2nd year we were 2nd. He absolutely LOVES this pen, the ground, the crowd, everything about it. The weather was getting a little scary to us as it was raining and lightning and even though it rained a good bit, it didn’t hurt the ground at all. It maybe even made it a little better than it was the night before. Biscuit stood in the trailer so he could dry out some. We did our normal little “pre-game” routine, saddled and warmed up. It’s can chasing time now!! When they cranked up the music, I had to step off of him to keep him somewhat quiet. He gets to “dancing” a little too early and he needs to save up his energy! As he is running circles around me, they are getting closer and closer to us. So I find a few horses that are tied to the fence at the end of the run out, squeeze him in between them and a trailer and get on. It’s normally an act of Congress to get back on him after he is so fired up. Even someone holding him doesn’t help! I get on and head to make a run. I was feeling so good about this run. The times were stacking up on each other and the lead had already changed in our perf from the night before. He walks towards the arena quietly, then starts his crow hopping as we get closer and then he leaps, all four feet off the ground and takes off. I sent him in the arena harder than usual. He got past the 1st a good bit but was really working hard. He rolls back on the 1st as if he knows he has to make up some time. Leaving it, he barely catches it with his hip! I had moved my leg to try to avoid hitting it but it didn’t matter. The rest of the run was beautiful. I was heartbroken but there is always next time!

Caraway, Ar. IPRA. July 3rd.
This was the first time we have ever been to this “arena”. Although you can’t really call it an arena seeing as how it’s on a baseball diamond! 🙂 You can look at it like this…the 1st and 2nd barrel is running OVER the pitchers mound! The ground was good considering this is the same place where the boys slide into home plate. A 14.9 was winning it from the night before by Heather Moore. Biscuit had been on top of his game at Searcy, Ar.’s great Lucky Dog Barrel Race the day before. Friday at Searcy we pulled 5th in the 1D out 260 horses and my mare had ran good too. We were all feeling good, a little worn out but ready to rock and roll. As soon as we got to the rodeo, I saddled up and headed up to the pen because we had to park a long ways from there. A nice little warm up and taking it easy, they call our name. Biscuit does his same little “dance” where he scares most of the spectators and then I send him down the alley way to do his job. He laid down a really nice run that ended in us placing 3rd with a 15.1. I was very pleased with the whole weekend! It’s so nice to be able to step up on a horse that I feel confident he is gonna work for me every trip!

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Well, Biscuit and I are getting more and more excited about the rodeos cranking up!! He has been running really good lately which I’m afraid to say because I don’t like to speak to soon! 🙂 Anywho, we entered the Tupelo, Ms. PRCA. This is one pen that we have never been to seeing as how they haven’t had this rodeo in a couple of years. It’s a side gate set up and the ground has had some horror stories behind it. Oh well…that’s not gonna stop us from entering!! So we head down…we wound up getting up in slack which was fine by me. There were a lot of hit barrels, horses running off from the barrels from the banners and horses ducking barrels. You never really know what to expect, I don’t guess. Biscuit walked in like a complete gentleman, which suprised me!! We walk him down past the chutes to set him up for his first barrel. One left turn to the first. He sucks it up, I had to hold him off of the second a good bit but he got around it nicely after we got to it. The third was pretty nice and he ran home hard. We were sitting sixth by the end of slack but there was still a performance for Saturday night left with a bunch of nice horses left to run. One of my good friends went to the rodeo Saturday night as her husband was roping. She was sending me text updates on what was getting done. By the end of the second performance, we wound up splitting the last whole (8th place) with another girl. All in all…not too bad!! We’ll see what happens later on down the road!!

Ok, so its been a while since I’ve stopped by to give you guys an update!! The winter has been kinda slow and we have just been going to some of the local barrel races to keep Biscuit and I in tune with each other. One of the first rodeos back since late fall, we enter. Its the Liberty Bowl Rodeo in Memphis, Tn. We drew up in slack which is nearly miserable at this rodeo considering its a one night rodeo and slack is after the performance. Not to mention they start the slack off with the rest of the bull riders, then go into all of the roping, then us girls! So we usually get to run around two and three o’clock in the morning. By this time, its Biscuit and my bedtime and I had to be at work in the morning!! Plus, its freezing and rainy. Now I know what your thinking…Cowgirl up, right!! Well, thats exactly what we did. So from the performance, Heather Moore was winning it with a 14.2. She had a very pretty run and I was knew that was going to be a hard time to change. Biscuit warmed up great and was a complete gentleman. We had watched the ground all through the performance and it was ok…maybe looked a little slick but nothing horrible. So they call our name and I send him down the alley. He eats the paint off of all three cans and heads home, giving me all he has with his little short legs. We stopped the clock at a 14.1 to take the lead. Thank the good Lord, our time held through the other 40+ head and we take home the first place check!! I was unbelievably excited and so pleased with my pony considering I hadn’t seen him in a week because he was in Alabama working on his new work out program! 🙂 Now rodeo season is starting to crank up and we are getting really excited!! So stick around…and hopefully look for more GREAT news from us!!!!!

Tracey Goodman and Biscuit

Well, this is one of my absolute most favorite rodeos seeing as how it’s my hometown rodeo. Last year, it was also the rodeo that I filled my permit on by taking home the 2nd place check! Biscuit seems to really fire hard in this pen at the rodeos. He loves the loud crowd and the attention that he gets!! To start the day off right, my cousin and I head to the arena knowing it doesn’t take long to get there. Little did I know or remember…traffic was gonna be horrible considering they were having the fair and everyone within a 200 mile radius was coming to it to it. Also, the low fuel light was on on my truck so at every stop we would make…I’d turn the truck off and wait in line. Pitiful, I know!! Anyways, we make it to the gas station and then back to the traffic jam. We park after about a 30 minute wait, get out, pay our fees and start getting ready. Biscuit warmed up pretty good. He was wired for sound so I took him out away from all civilization and let him chill some. That always helps him mentally. He can handle anything you throw at him but you have to go about it the right way or he will tell you different!! lol. So, let the can chasing begin!! The times were stacked in there pretty thick from the night before and a good bit faster than last year. I was really curious to see how this turned out. Well, I put Biscuit in his little “safe corner” close to the arena, get on and send him down the alley. Picture perfect first barrel…which is slightly unusual. Pretty nice second and third and he hit another gear coming out. The crowd was going crazy!! We had the fastest time of the night and that was good enough to take home 4th for the weekend. It was a tough and very good rodeo. It’s such a good feeling to be blessed with a good run, especially in your home town for everyone you know to see.

Well, we went to a PRCA on Aug 22nd in Imboden, Ar. The rodeo season is kinda winding down some (the close ones atleast) and I am really looking to make some good runs and pull checks even though I’m too far out of the standings. You still like to finish out with a bang, right. Biscuit has been working pretty good for me. He never ceases to amaze me!! So here we go, just my cousin, my dog, Biscuit and myself, headed for Imboden. We get there and get ready. He warms up GREAT!! Oh yeah!! Now I’m really pumped. I had heard that the night before the ground was really slick but it should have dried out some since slack had already ran on it and it had all day Saturday with the sun on it. We were 2nd out but I couldn’t see the girl that ran before me to see how the ground held. “Heck, Biscuit takes care of me. I’ll just run him and he will be the judge!” Those were my last thoughts as I was entering the arena at a wide open run. ha! This arena has a side gate from the right, so as he is running in, I’m picking him up and moving him over to get a good run at the 1st. He listens fairly well and moves over. You have to understand, he isn’t the type of horse you go in and “set-up”. 🙂 The stretch to number one felt pretty good. He was running HARD it felt like. All of a sudden, about 2 strides to #1, his back end goes down. Then the front, then he hits the ground and gets back up all in, what felt like one motion. I guess the impact of his fall jolted a VERY relaxed me and I went head over heels. Now I don’t mean for this to sound ugly, but in the short 18 years that I have been barrel racing, I have NEVER come off of one during a run. It was one of those crashes I didn’t even see coming! Back to the run…Biscuit gets up and takes off to the run out. The guys catch him and here I come to get him back. Already back to my feet! All was fine. Biscuit was ok! I was ok. The most perfect song was playing when I get to my knees. WILD THANG! Now we are just waiting on the next run to try to redeem ourselves! 🙂

This is a rodeo that I think I run every year and wind up one hole out! lol. Well, I sang the same ole song again this year. We had a really nice run. He worked great considering we were on the very bottom of the ground and that pen gets really deep! Our time held for either 2nd or 3rd the first night but we wound up getting bumped to either 4th or 5th and they only paid 3 holes!! This is why I would rather NOT run IPRA. 3 holes paid!! lol.
